Every week, I'll be bringing you a comic book cover that I feel eclipses others out there—to the point I might just have to own it! The BadAss Comic Book Cover for this week is for The Goon #41. This is one of those comic books I love. It's different. No superheroes. No grand history spanning eighty years to adhere to. This is the baby of Eric Powell and he has absolute control over his creation. That creation? The Goon. Even the undead fear him. The series has paranormal elements that appeal to our current fixation on vampires, werewolves, zombies, and the like. Why do I love this cover though? It's one of those paranormal elements. The Zombie Priest. I love the attention to detail that Powell employes yet the simplicity of his line work. The crazed, mad eye. The scraggly beard and hair. The hat with its dead things. It is a simple portrait piece yet it conveys so much about the Priest. And with the lack of background, all attention is focused on its character. Looks like the Goon will have his hands full again! Here is a bit more about The Goon #41:
Writer: Eric Powell Artist: Eric Powell, Mark Buckingham Colorist: Eric Powell Cover Artist: Eric Powell The Story: What’s an enterprising, demonic witch doctor and former mob boss of the undead to do when he finds himself down on his luck? Witchcraft for hire, of course. The Zombie Priest, now going under the alias of Mr. Corpus, proves there’s no keeping a good fiend down and he’s still more than willing to make trouble for the Goon! * Includes a black and white Goon short illustrated by Mark Buckingham (Fables). * The Zombie Priest is back! * Now monthly!
The Goon #41 is in fine comic book stores now! More next Saturday! In the meantime, go visit your local comic book store...
